In December 2024, the law formerly known as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act was officially renamed the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act as part of the Stop Campus Hazing Act. The Clery Center and IACLEA joined SAFE Campuses, LLC in supporting the change.
The new name better reflects what the law actually does today. What began as basic crime reporting has grown into a much broader framework that includes timely warnings, emergency notifications, prevention programs, fire safety, and hazing transparency.
Why the Name Changed
SAFE Campuses, LLC President S. Daniel Carter, who has worked with the Clery Act since its earliest days, has long observed that the previous title no longer captured the law’s full purpose. The updated name clearly signals its focus on proactive safety and campus-wide teamwork.
Institutions are encouraged to update their Annual Security Reports and other official materials with the law’s official new name so students and families clearly understand its current focus on proactive campus safety.
